The history of The Belden Brick Company is a testament to American ingenuity, entrepreneurial spirit, and a family’s unwavering commitment to excellence in brickmaking. For more than 140 years, the Belden name has been synonymous with quality, craftsmanship, and leadership in the masonry industry.
Our story began in 1885, when founder Henry S. Belden, born on July 4, 1840, and the son of Judge G.W. Belden, established the Diebold Fire Brick Company on the Belden family farm in Canton, Ohio. His vision for a new generation of high-quality brick would soon influence construction practices across Ohio and beyond.
Henry’s inspiration originated at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, where he first encountered a revolutionary stiff-mud brick-making machine. Determined to bring this innovation back home, he began producing paving and fire brick that transformed the region’s streetscape. His paving brick became the first recorded use of brick pavement in the city of Canton, a significant breakthrough that quickly spread throughout the county and the state.
What began as a single entrepreneurial venture has evolved into one of the nation’s most respected brick manufacturers, backed by five generations of leadership, continuous innovation, and a steadfast dedication to the craft.
