Who We Are

Founded in 1885, The Belden Brick Company stands today as the largest family-owned brick manufacturer in the United States and one of the most respected names in the masonry industry. Rooted in the principles of integrity, community, quality, and service, our company continues to honor the vision established by early leaders Henry S. Belden and Paul Belden, Sr. While we’ve grown significantly over the past 140 years, our expansion has remained intentional and authentic—allowing us to stay independent, customer-focused, and driven by a dedicated team of experts

At the heart of our success is Sugarcreek, Ohio, home to a highly skilled brickmaking community whose craftsmanship dates back to the 19th century. This tradition of excellence helped shape our early growth, including the establishment of the Belden Face Brick Company in Tuscarawas County in 1914 and the acquisition of the Finzer Brothers Clay Company in Sugarcreek in 1946.

Today, The Belden Brick Company operates five state-of-the-art manufacturing plants and one thin brick sawing facility, employing approximately 500 team members and producing more than 200 million standard brick equivalents annually. Our commitment to innovation and quality extends across our entire family of brands, which includes:

  • Belden Tri-State Building Materials, based in New York and Philadelphia
  • The Belden Brick Sales Company, serving Michigan
  • Premier Brick Sales, LLC, serving Illinois, Indiana, and Florida

Together, we provide architects, builders, distributors, and homeowners with a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality brick products backed by unmatched experience and trusted industry leadership.

Our History

A legacy of American craftsmanship and innovation

The history of The Belden Brick Company is a testament to American ingenuity, entrepreneurial spirit, and a family’s unwavering commitment to excellence in brickmaking. For more than 140 years, the Belden name has been synonymous with quality, craftsmanship, and leadership in the masonry industry.

Our story began in 1885, when founder Henry S. Belden, born on July 4, 1840, and the son of Judge G.W. Belden, established the Diebold Fire Brick Company on the Belden family farm in Canton, Ohio. His vision for a new generation of high-quality brick would soon influence construction practices across Ohio and beyond.

Henry’s inspiration originated at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, where he first encountered a revolutionary stiff-mud brick-making machine. Determined to bring this innovation back home, he began producing paving and fire brick that transformed the region’s streetscape. His paving brick became the first recorded use of brick pavement in the city of Canton, a significant breakthrough that quickly spread throughout the county and the state.

What began as a single entrepreneurial venture has evolved into one of the nation’s most respected brick manufacturers, backed by five generations of leadership, continuous innovation, and a steadfast dedication to the craft.
